About the Artist

Susan Varo

Susan is a New York based visual artist who has always been fascinated with bright colors, shapes and designs.  She began drawing at around eight years of age which included animals, people and cartoon characters.

Her work quickly became recognized by her teachers and peers. She won art contests and received many certificates in art.  In 1974, she received a scholarship to attend Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.

Soon after, she began using watercolor and oil paints on canvas to create her artwork.  Nearly all of her work is created in the style of realism.  Most of her paintings reflects a specific and special moment in time before it's gone.

Sometimes, it's all about the beauty or the feeling from it.  Susan says, "I want viewers to see what I see and feel what I felt at the time of creation as I capture it to make a lasting impression".

All of her works are intricate and unique and close attention is paid to detail which affects the outcome of each and every piece  created.

Throughout the next several years, she experimented with other mediums from doing simple illustrations on paper until deciding to work mainly with oil paints on stretch canvas to create masterful works.

In 1984, after attended The Center for The Media Arts in New York City where she continued pursing her passion with occasional freelance work and various other occupations.  Unfortunately, before the completion of her course,  she would be faced with a tremendous turning point.  The loss of a beloved family member would send her in search of a deeper meaning of life and work which she realized would be through expressing herself through her talent.   Susan states, "My artwork has allowed me to convey my feelings through my work and express my life's calling to others in various creative ways".

From 2001 onward,  she continued to create and sell paintings, which included portraits, landscapes and still life.  She also began to sell hand-painted greeting cards using watercolor and acrylic paints.  Susan also entered a few art contests and then began incorporating various other creative passions with her artwork including photography, poetry and travel.

Susan's travels are incorporation in some of her works which includes Utah, Mexico, Egypt and Alaska.  Her passion for visual art led her to start a small home-based business, My Works of Art, LLC in 2006 which allows her to follow her hearts desire to fulfill her dream of creating art from life.

Her photography skills have also assisted her during her travels to expand her vision by capturing in photographs those quick moments that could be recreated in a painting.  A more recent undertaking and a little more than a hobby has included mosaic artwork.

Aside from her being a visual artist, Susan enjoys writing poetry which is published in the Queens Times and has been for nearly three years whereas she has received praised for her submissions.  Her published writings can be view at http://www.queenstimes.com.

THE ARTS ARE A VITAL PART OF OUR CULTURE, SURROUNDINGS, ARCHITECTURE, HISTORY, STYLE, COMMUNICATION AND COMMUNITY.  IT ENORMOUSLY IMPACTS FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION ALLOWING AN OUTLET WHERE EVERYONE CAN PARTICIPATE IN THESE VARIOUS FORMS OF EXPRESSION.  WITHOUT THE ARTS THERE IS NO REFLECTION OF WHAT EACH OF US CAN BRING TO OTHERS FROM OUR EXPERIENCES, OUR WAY OF LIFE, RACE, RELIGION, BELIEFS, HOPES, DESIRES AND VISIONS OF THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE.  THE ARTS IN ALL OF ITS FORMS ADD DIMENSION, COLOR, SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE TO EVERYONE BY STIMULATING OUR THOUGHTS AND SENSES LIKE NO OTHER FORM OF COMMUNICATION.  IT IS ALSO ENTERTAINING, GREAT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND IMPERATIVE FOR EDUCATION AND LEARNING.
